High-pressure jetting or drain snake: which technique when?

Unblocking has two tools: the drain snake and the high-pressure jetter. Both free the pipe, but they do it fundamentally differently — and that difference decides which technique fits which blockage. If you meet the terms in a quote, you also want to know what is about to happen in your house, and why one job is done in half an hour while the other calls for a van full of equipment.

The drain snake is the mechanical tool: a springy spiral pushed through the pipe while rotating, boring through the clog or pulling it back on its head. A snake excels at local work close to an access point: a clog behind the toilet bowl, a blocked sink or shower drain, a bend just past the trap. Hand snakes of a few metres exist for DIYers; technicians work with machine-driven snakes that reach tens of metres and swap cutting heads. The limitation: a snake makes a hole in the clog, but does not clean the pipe — grease on the wall stays put.

Trying a hand snake yourself is fine with one blocked drain, after the plunger. Work calmly and feed the snake while rotating; force it and it kinks double, or damages the pipe wall or a rubber seal in older pipework. If the snake will not pass a bend, or comes back clean while the drain stays shut, the clog sits further than your tool reaches — that is the moment to submit a request, not to push harder.

High-pressure jetting works the other way round: a hose with a nozzle enters the pipe and blasts the entire pipe wall clean with water pressure, from grease and sludge to sand and fine roots; the jet carries the loosened debris off towards the sewer. That makes jetting the technique for sewer work, outdoor pipes and anything structurally fouled — the standard for a sewer blockage or a blocked downpipe or outdoor drainage. This is not DIY territory: professional equipment runs pressures that are dangerous to pipe and user without experience. Always mention whether chemical drain cleaner is sitting in the pipe, so the technician can protect themselves.

The rule of thumb follows the symptom. One blocked drain close to the access point: plunger or snake. A toilet that will not flush through: pump or snake, usually fixed within an hour. Several drains at once, water rising, a problem outside or a blockage that keeps returning: jetting, because then it sits deeper and the pipe itself is fouled. And recurring blockages really call for a third tool: the camera inspection (€ 85-175), which shows after jetting what the cause was — grease, roots or subsidence. Unsure which way your case falls? Then choose nothing: describe what you see and leave the choice of technique to the technician — renting the wrong tool is more expensive than renting no tool.

In practice a technician chooses on site, not in advance, and combines: first the acute clog out with pump or snake, then the pipe clean with jetting, and the camera through it when in doubt. Many companies give a flow guarantee — if the same blockage returns within the period, they come back free of charge. Ask upfront exactly what that guarantee covers: the flow yes, the underlying cause usually not.

For the costs the technique itself matters little; the job sets the price. Unblocking a toilet costs € 95-195, a sink or shower drain € 95-225, an emergency sewer blockage € 125-350 and a downpipe or outdoor job € 110-275; where no fixed job price applies, drain companies charge € 100 to € 175 per hour.
